I always find the whole argument that fanfic can be just as good as books really weird bc they're also written for very different reasons, and what it's trying to accomplish is very different, not to mention the starting point. Imo they're not really comparable in that way. What makes a good book is very different from what makes a good fanfic, and it's so annoying bc like. Just enjoy it for what it is there's really no need to insist that fanfic is equal to [whatever classic great literature book that reuses themes from another] bc it really isn't!
i agree i think by ranking everything from best to worst on such a vertical scale takes away from the space they occupy. it doesn’t have to be better or worse than a similar thing to be worth something
