Kal :( I moved recently and have desperately been looking for a zoom book club and I called a bunch of different libraries and they're all filled with old people and I called one and they were finally like "our demographic is mostly young moms" so I was like "okay cool!" This month's book was The Leavers, and it was my first time participating, and the book is like a really intense book about identity, and the characters' lives as Chinese immigrants, one of whom got adopted by white parents, based off of a true story, and I joined the call, and it was like. 4 60 year old white women, one of whom couldn't even make her camera start for the first like 5 minutes, talking about how they didn't think a 16yo single mom who got deported from the factory she was working it and accidentally abandons her son is a "sympathetic character," and how they don't get why the kid has such an issue with his adoptive parents, because they "seemed nice," and I just. Wanted to scream forever. ✌️

  • this is why i dont join that shit it’s all just white ppl acting uppity and being microaggressive. ok jennifer and i dont think someone who makes casserole is a sympathetic character so where do we go from here.
